68 year old male patient

Clinical Data

Known case of multiple myeloma (plasma cell myeloma).

Patient underwent bone marrow transplantation 2 years ago.

A spinal mass has been removed 2 months ago. Histopathology reported infiltration with plasma cell neoplasm. Patient started chemotherapy.

4 days ago patient admitted with fever, cough , and generalized body-ache.

Pleural fluid aspirate is collected and sent to lab.

Related Laboratory Results

  • Mild Normocytic Normochromic Anemia.
  • Pleural Fluid Cell Count (by automated cell counter):

Total Cell Count: 1.15X103 /uL - WBC: 0.45X103 /uL

Mononuclear Cells: 85% - Polymorphnuclear leukocytes: 15%

  • Microscopic examination of pleural fluid was performed

Comment / Findings

Pleural Fluid smear was stained with Giemsa Stain.

Microscopic examination showed 65% of plueral fluid cells are plasma cells. Some of them are multinucleated.
